Facebook Marketplace vs Page posts for car dealers
Where a dealership should put its cars on Facebook: Marketplace listings, Page posts and reels, or inventory ads. What each does, and the 2023 rule that changed Marketplace.

Key takeaways
- Since January 2023, Meta does not let sellers create vehicle listings from a business Page; free Marketplace listings come from personal profiles.
- Page posts and reels build the dealership’s name and trust; Marketplace puts single cars in front of people searching right now.
- The paid way to show dealer stock on Marketplace is automotive inventory ads from a vehicle catalog; check they are offered in your country in Ads Manager.
- Marketplace messages go to a person’s Messenger, not the Page inbox, so decide who answers them before you start.
- Most dealers do best with both: a steady Page with reels, and individual cars where buyers search.
Ask ten dealers where they sell on Facebook and you will hear two answers: “Marketplace” and “our Page”. They are different tools with different rules. This guide explains what each one does for a dealership in 2026, what changed, and how to use them together.
Facts about Meta’s products are from Meta’s own help pages and newsroom, checked in October 2026. Features differ by country and change often, so check them in your own account.
The short answer
| Marketplace listing | Page post or reel | Automotive inventory ad | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who can post | A personal profile | Your business Page | Your ad account, from a vehicle catalog |
| Cost | Free | Free (boosting is paid) | Paid |
| Best for | One car, to people searching now | Your brand, trust, offers and reels | All your stock, at scale |
| Where messages go | The lister’s personal Messenger | The Page inbox | The Page inbox or a lead form |
What changed on Marketplace
Until 2023, dealers in some countries could list stock on Marketplace from their business Page, with a Vehicles tab and an inventory manager. Meta ended that on 30 January 2023: sellers can no longer create vehicle listings from a business Page, and Meta pointed them to ads instead. The markets it named were the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia and Australia. Free partner inventory feeds had already ended in September 2021.
In Pakistan, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, the Vehicles category on Marketplace is busy (in October 2026, Islamabad, Dubai and Riyadh all showed local car listings priced in rupees, dirhams and riyals), but those listings come from personal profiles. There was never a Page-based dealer route there to lose.
What Page posts do that Marketplace cannot
A Marketplace listing sells one car to one person. Your Page sells the dealership, which is what makes a buyer pick you over the next seller with the same model.
- Reels. Since 2025, Facebook treats videos as reels. Walkarounds, price reveals and weekly stock reels reach people who do not follow you yet.
- Trust. Sold and delivered posts, customer quotes and your inspection checklist answer the “is this dealer honest?” question.
- Offers. Finance, trade-in and festive campaigns need a brand behind them. See Eid and holiday campaigns for car dealers.
- One inbox. Messages, comments and WhatsApp arrive in Meta Business Suite, where the team can share them.
Organic Page reach is modest: third-party benchmarks put a typical post at a few percent of followers. That is why consistency matters more than any single post, and why reels, which are shown to non-followers, deserve a regular slot.
Automotive inventory ads: the paid route to Marketplace
Automotive inventory ads are catalog ads for vehicles. You upload a vehicle catalog (make, model, year, mileage, price, photos and more) and Meta shows the right car to the right person, including in the Marketplace vehicle feed. The destination can be your website or a vehicle page on Facebook with Messenger or a lead form.
Meta’s documentation does not list the countries where they run. Before planning around them, create a vehicle catalog in Commerce Manager for your ad account and check what Ads Manager offers you.
Messages: decide who answers
A Marketplace enquiry lands in the Messenger of the person who listed the car, not in the Page inbox. If three salespeople list cars, buyers are talking to three personal inboxes. Agree on response times, and make sure an enquiry is not lost when someone is on leave. Page posts, boosted posts and ads keep conversations in the shared Page inbox, where a click-to-WhatsApp button can also send buyers straight to your WhatsApp Business number.
A simple plan that uses both
- Post every car on your Page, with price, mileage, photos and the salesperson’s WhatsApp. A listing link can become the post in a minute.
- Add three or four reels a week: a walkaround, a price reveal and the weekly stock. See car dealer reels ideas.
- Mix in trust and offer posts, using the car dealer content calendar.
- List individual cars on Marketplace only from accounts that will answer quickly, and remove them the day they sell.
- Test inventory ads once your catalog is ready and they are offered in your country.
Frequently asked questions
Can a car dealership list cars on Facebook Marketplace?
Not from a business Page: Meta stopped vehicle listings from Pages on 30 January 2023. Listings come from personal profiles, and the paid route is automotive inventory ads from a vehicle catalog.
Is Marketplace or a Facebook Page better for selling cars?
They do different jobs. Marketplace puts one car in front of people searching now; a Page builds the trust and reach that make buyers choose your dealership. Most dealers need both.
Are automotive inventory ads available in Pakistan or the UAE?
Meta’s documentation does not list the countries. Create a vehicle catalog in Commerce Manager and check what Ads Manager offers your account.
Do Marketplace messages go to the Page inbox?
No. They go to the Messenger of the person who listed the car. Page posts and ads keep conversations in the shared Page inbox.
